What We Do
Taylor Timber provides structural engineering services for architects and developers working on buildings with ambition — commercial, multifamily, civic, and institutional projects where the structural system is integral to the architecture.
We work on:
Multifamily residential (apartments, workforce housing, mixed-use)
Commercial and retail buildings
Civic and institutional projects (schools, libraries, community centers)
Hospitality (restaurants, hotels, lodges)
Renovation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings
We bring particular expertise in:
Mass timber and wood construction
Earthquake engineering (eight years at Degenkolb Engineers on hospitals, higher education, and institutional buildings)
Embodied carbon reduction and SE 2050 methodology
Structural steel and hybrid systems
Project Scale
Taylor Timber is best suited to projects with construction budgets of $1M and above. Our sweet spot is $3M–$15M. Complex enough to warrant genuine engineering judgment, scaled appropriately for a dedicated principal-level engineer on every project.
What We Don’t Do
Taylor Timber does not offer pre-purchase home inspections, foundation assessments for existing residences, permit stamps for agricultural or accessory structures, or redline reviews. These engagements carry risks that we are not positioned to manage responsibly within a limited scope, and we believe our clients are better served by full construction documents with appropriate detail and coordination. If you’re looking for these services, the Montana Board of Professional Engineers maintains a public directory of licensed engineers.
How We Work
Every Taylor Timber project is led by Chad Taylor. There are no handoffs to junior staff. You get the same engineer from schematic design through construction administration. One who has seen your project from every angle and can answer the contractor’s RFI on a Friday afternoon without digging through someone else’s notes.
